Downwell

Downwell is a vertically scrolling shooting-platformer, first released as a smartphone and PC game before being ported onto the PlayStation 4 and Vita. Players can move left or right, jump, and fire weapons from gunboots while in the air to eliminate enemies, while traversing down through levels that are procedurally generated. The game is presented in a palette with only three colors which juxtapose against a black background with white outlines.

A curious man named Welltaro is strolling through a park one night when he comes across a well. Deciding to see what is inside, he straps on his gunboots and heads down, avoiding and eliminating enemies while seeking treasure.

Downwell received positive reviews with an average score of 84%, praised for its concept and level design, challenge, and overall fun.

The game itself is not long, but can be very challenging. A playthrough on Hard mode is required for a few trophies, and this is what gets in the way of the Platinum for some players. But with plenty of practice, patience, and some luck, any average player can eventually unlock the Platinum.

Expect anywhere between 15-50 hours, depending on your skills and luck.

NOTE: The trophies on the PS4 share the same list with those on the PS Vita.

Start by selecting Normal mode and just beat the game. Here, focus on just getting used to the controls and gaining practice while you'll need later on. You'll unlock level-related trophies along the way, as well as a few others. It should be noted that the Frugality trophy requires you to have more than 5000 gems at one time, so avoid buying anything until you've gotten the trophy.

Once you've beaten the game once, we recommend working on all the miscellaneous trophies before worrying about Hard mode. The more practice, the better. Check out the Downwell trophy guide links under our Links tab to see details on which trophies you still need.

With all that completed, it's time to up the challenge by completing the game on Hard mode. In order to select it, head into Styles, select Usual Style, then press Left. You should hear an evil laugh which indicates that Hard mode has been selected.

If Hard mode is giving you serious trouble, check out both the Downwell trophy guide links and guides under our Links tab for more advice.

Good luck!

PlayStation Plus Free Games for August 2017

It’s that time of the month again! Sony has unveiled their next line-up of PlayStation Plus free games for August 2017, which will be available for download on Tuesday, August 1.

For the PlayStation 4, there’s Just Cause 3, a third-person action adventure set in an open world in the fictional Mediterranean republic, where the protagonist attempts to restore freedom from a military dictatorship. And Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry, a stand-alone DLC from Assassin’s Creed IV where, after being shipwrecked in Haiti, Adewale joins a group of freedom fighters to free slaves.

On the PlayStation 3, there’s Super Motherload, a co-op “digging” adventure with sci-fi horror elements, where players search to collect gems and minerals Mars. And Snakeball, the 2007 remake of the classic Snake, updated in 3D and with flashy disco graphics.

And for the PlayStation Vita, there’s Downwell, a vertically scrolling platformer in which players explore the depths of a well that is inhabited by monsters. This game is also a cross-plat with the PS4. And Level 22, a comical stealth adventure with puzzle elements, where Gary attempts to sneak back to his office desk after being late for work.

Among the free games in August’s line-up, only Just Cause 3 and Downwell have Platinum trophies to unlock. Just Cause 3 is fairly average in terms of difficulty, though will require roughly 60 hours to complete. Also, both Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry and Level 22 are fairly easy to collect 100% of the Trophies if following a guide, and only needs about 5 hours each. It should also be noted that since Snakeball was released in 2007 before Trophy Support, the game has no Trophies to unlock.
